This may not surprise anyone here and it didn't really surprise my family, but it's still a nice story. We had to go out of town for a few days this past weekend and my neighbor (who is over here most days anyway) came over to feed the iggies, birds, and other assorted creatures. I got a call the day after we left that Kismet was acting strangely. She kept charging the cage whenever my friend would approach (and Jo and the iggies are not strangers) and when she reached in to get her food dish Kismet slapped her vehnemently with her tail (though she did not attempt to bite). Mayan wasn't happy either, but other than puffing up to look big he was fairly well behaved and while Kismet just threw food around the cage, Mayan ate fine and didn't even seem to miss us too much. When we got home at 2:00 am on Sunday, Kismet immediately woke up and stuck her nose through the cage. I opened it and she came to me immediately, burying her head under my arm and collapsing her weight against me (she's doen this in the past, even when I just had to leave her with my husband). I held her for a while and then put her back to bed. The next morning, my husband put her in her outside cage before I got up. Later I went outside where Mike and Elizabeth were sitting on the patio. Kismet ran to the side of the enclosure and kept trying to stick her head out. I reached in and scratched her head through the spaces and she kept trying to force her way through the cage. I opened it up and she again came right to me and spent most of the afternoon pressed as close against me as she could. Mayan, otoh, is typically aloof about our being back.
I find myself wondering more about the behaviors of some cyclura species in the wild. I wonder if they are perhaps more social than Greens? Or maybe it's just a wierd byproduct of being a hybrid? I also posted this story on Iguana Den, but given that this is a cyclura section I was hoping to get more response. Kismet is mostly Cuban, though she is also part lewisi.
