We went to an auction one Saturday. When we returned home our horse was gone. Someone had taken him. Later that evening we tracked down the guy who had him. Fortunately one of the neighbors knew where the guy lived. We had gotten his phone number and called him. He wouldn't tell us where he lived. And he kept telling us he'd meet us somewhere and then never show up. At about 9pm that night I just walked over to the guys house and told him I'd stomp him in to the ground if he stopped me from taking my horse. When I started walking my horse off his property he had a really bad limp. So I'm assuming something happened during the time this guy had him. We still don't know what caused it. My wife and I are in the process of suing the guy for vet bills.

Depending on the cost of the horse that should have been a legal matter and he most likely could have been arrested.
In the "Old West" he would have been hung for horse thievery"

he still should be hung for horse thievery. What a Prick. Why exactly did he feel the need to come to your house and take your horse? I would have called the police and reported it stolen. I'm sure he could be charged for theft, possession of stolen goods. Since you ride a horse it should have the same concequinces as stealing a car in my opinion. The guy sounds like a real low life. And I'm glad you are suing him for vet costs. You should sue for lost wages, time off work and anything else while your at it.
Some people..

In Arizona there still is a law that you can be hung for stealing a horse. The Maricopa sheriff said that unfortunately we can't prove he was the one that opened our gate. The guy claims that our horse was wandering around for 3 days and he picked it up. Which is completely untrue. Our neighbor noticed the horse outside his property and put it in his yard. This guy went over there and said it was his horse and took it. But because we don't have proof he took it off our property the horse is considered "roaming". That's the loophole of why we can't get him arrested for stealing the horse.
What I'm thinking he did was open the gate and let the horse out. Then when people saw the horse walking around it gave him the opportunity to go take it. This guy lives like 3 miles from where I do. The horse was only 1/8 of a mile from my house when my neighbor put it in his fenced yard. Then this guy shows up from nowhere to claim it's his horse and take it. Then when the guy refused to tell me where he lived so I could get my horse that settled it for me what he was doing. When I arrived at his house later that night other people showed up with a trailer to take my horse. Obviously he was trying to sell the horse before I found out where he lived. It's all too suspicious how it happened.
The sheriff did say however that the guy admitted to having the horse so we can sue him in civil court for the costs of our vet bills. Unfortunately the guy is trailer trash and doesn't own much of anything and doesn't have a job. So I will be hard pressed to actually receive any money from him.

i'd of killed him(the bloke i mean)not the horse, some people Oh trust me I was at the point where the guy needed to pack some belongings for a long hospital stay. Fortunately for him one of my neighbors had come along to help calm me down and get the horse out of there as quickly as possible. After I got the horse home the guy shows up at my house with his wife. I never told them where I lived either so that was another clue that he had been there. I informed him that I was going to stomp the crap out of him. No sooner than I finished my sentence the sheriff shows up at my house. Go figure. He tried getting me arrested for threatening him but the cop was nice and told him he better leave now.

what a loser. I hate people like that. Man so flippin retarded. I have to agree with you I would have stomped the guy. He would have accidently fell down when walking to the welfare corner store. Or he slipped when walking down the stairs of the trailer. (all trailers have stairs I lived in one for a short time) lol
Too bad he wasn't caught steeling. Maybe people would realize NOT to steal other peoples belongings. And if the neighbour knew it was your horse he should have brought it back to your house and put it back in the pen. We pad locked our gates just for stupid people like that. I don't think here we can do anything if a horse gets stolen. We do have one really old stupid law in our "village" though. "you cannot drag a dead horse through the four corners on a Sunday" That is our horse law. The village I live in used to be a really booming gun slinging town from the history. Lots of buildings from that era were burnt or torn down. Sadly.
I'm glad at least you got him back in time before he was stolen again. But if he did sell the horse and they were caught with the horse I wonder what would have happened then.
Hope he makes a full recovery though. And hope it happens soon. Some people really don't think before they do anything. And should never own an animal let alone have kids. He will get his in the end so they say. Karma has a bad way of getting a hold of you sometimes.
Keep us up on his progress though. No matter if its great or not so good progress.

At least some good news finally. Winston appears to be feeling much better. The edema on his chest and sheath have gone down dramatically over the past 3 days. His hoof however is still swollen around the coronary band and up his leg. But it's not as bad as it was. And he is walking better on it. My wife is feeling much better now. I'm sure it will still be a couple more months before he's feeling close to 100%.
I've had a bad week with my animals. With Zorak breaking his tail and now his arm. Then 2 nights ago I had to rush my 5 month old pug Rygel to the vet because his head swelled up like a balloon. I've spent out a total of 1000 dollars in the past 2 weeks in vet bills. Hopefully I'll see the light at the end of the tunnel soon and all my animals will be healthy and ok.

I'm very scared that we may end up having to put Winston down. His hoof has started to seperate from his leg in the back. We are working hard to get new hoof growth or to get it to heal back together. At this time I'm just very upset after everything he's been through. And now to have this happen is beyond anything I can describe. Bad luck is just following me around this month with my animals.

Oh no! I know this is such a hard area to keep up on. We had seized 7 horses 2 1/2 yrs ago. A colt of about 1 1/2 yrs old had thrush so badly it had developed into the bone and up the leg. After 5 months of aggressive treatment by the people who volunteered to keep them and treat them all, the colt finally had to be put down. I hope this doesn't end that way...but sometimes they do. I'm sending positive thoughts Winston's way.

At this time things appear to be going for the better. He's back to his old self. No more medications and all the swelling in his sheath and chest are gone. His leg and hoof have gone down considerably. He's also putting a lot more weight on his hoof.
The only issue remaining that is of concern is the hoof seperating in the back by the bulbs. So far his hoof is only that way in the back. The front of his hoof looks to be fine. If it stays this way he will most likely heal up and be ok after 6 to 8 months. We will know for sure in a couple more weeks. Normally if a horse will slough the hoof it happens within 5 to 6 weeks. Wish me luck.

hey there, That is a sad time with things like that when they happen. I've had a rush of bad luck at times also. Just take one day at a time. If its ment to be it will be. It has taken me almost 28 years to realize that. We can try as much as we want and offer some of the best treatment, but sometimes God has other plans. It is a really sad thing to watch happen, but as much as we try, hope and wish sometimes it happens. On the other hand, sometimes things get better and then its like the animal never looks back on what happened to it, or doesn't even feel sorry for what has happened to it. Animals have a strange way of getting better sometimes. I am wishing you the best though. With all your guys/girls over there. It is hard watching animals being sick and having a touch and go basis. Hopefully his hoof gets better and he is back to normal in no time. Its really good to hear about the sheath, chest and that is doing well. Hope it continues to do well. Keep us posted. Are you still planning to clean the sheath over time? Or less amount of time but still on a weekly or so basis? Also what happened to Rygel? is he ok now? Let us know

Now that the swelling is gone cleaning the horses sheath only needs to be done once every couple months. At least this is what I'm being told. His sheath is all back to normal now. Last week the last scab fell off and it looks like it was never swollen.
Unfortunately his leg has stopped getting better. It's not getting worse but not getting any better either. The vet has said he will most likely end up being permanently lame and that we should put him down. My wife has been calling around different vets and such trying to find out if there is anything we can do but it's not looking good. With no changes in the past 6 days with his leg we don't want him suffering either.
Wish us luck.
