Last night at 4AM I was in bed and sound asleep when I hear something along the lines of a shotgun go off. I went to check out what the noise was and After much searching I found out one of the infared light I ahve on top of my enclosure had exploded. I imeditley cleaned out the enclosure and checked on Speedy and Dizzy. There was glass shards every where but some how neither was hurt. Is this a normal thing? the light is less then a month old? what could cause it to explode like that? I was looking at some new lights but I did nto want to have to do it right now. I was thinking if it is not broke don't fix it. Well it is now broke. Any ideas on this I am lost. I have never seen a light explode before.

What I use is
for heat I use a radiant heat panel but used to use ceramic heat emitters (CHEs)--both can be used day and night since no light is given off
for UVB I use the MegaRay EB flood kit by ReptileUV.com but used to use Reptisun 5 (or IguanaLight 5) by ZooMed. The MegaRay is a highly recommended mecury vapor bulb and the Reptisun is a highly recommended fluorescent tube light
for added lighting I just use household light bulbs.
Yes I have heard about lights exploding. Had one of those basking lights (no UVB) explode. I changed to the CHE and regular household bulbs.

Hey Luke
I have had them exploded on me a couple of times over Mr. Worf I have changed as well to house hold bulbs I get the indoor flood lamps now. But for nighttime I would do what Marie said CHE (Ceramic Heat Emitters) or heat panel I really think the Heat panel or the CHE for Night and Day are great! But I to have stop using the Bulb for night, especially the Reptile ones they do have a problem with exploding. I am glad Speedy was ok and Dizzy!!

well I just got off the phone with Bob from Mega Ray and I will be ordering a heat emitter and a SB flood light next week. I do not want to have any more problems. Lord knows we have had enough problems recently.

Was that SB or EB. You don't need a seperate heat source for the SB usually. Just Curious.
BTW my iguanas love the MegaRays a lot more than any other light I've used.

Hey there,
I have also had infared lights blow up. But usually it is when water gets on them. I've never had one blow up just from being on.
I'm glad your animals wern't hurt!
I use CHE's and my female cham has the infared light. Everyone else has the other. They all have a reptisun 8.0 UV lights though.
I will be so glad when the weather is warm enough to put them outside. They will be much happier.
