Bonus question: Dragon knows she has an EB kit but doesn't know what EB and SB stands for. Can someone tell her. ************************************************************************* So I ordered a megaray light. I can't wait for it to get in. I use to half a reptisun mercury vapor bulb, but they never lasted nearly as long as they said they would and they were to expensive to replace every 4 to 6 months. I not sure if it cause they a built poorly or if it cause the iguanas would bump them around sometimes. So I am hoping I will have better experience with the megaray, Lately I only had normal uv strip light. Binkie and Scars color isn't nearly what it use to be when I had the reptisuns. I can't wait to see how much better they will be with the megaray, I'm glad I heard about them off this site. How long do the megarays normally last? I gonna add another lighting question on this. So I live in Indiana, the only state that does not their time for day light savings, well the past the law, so next season we will change time with everyone else. Should I change the iguanas timers with day light saving time, or just leave them on the same sleeping cycle? Will making them getting up an hour earlier affect their cycle?

The self ballasted are warranteed for 6 months. They are more fragile than the external also. Now the EB bulb has a 1 year guarantee (last 2x) . The EB is more expensive when buying it the first time because you have to buy both the bulb and the ballast (EB kit). But after that you just need to buy the bulbs which the replacement bulbs are about the same price as the self ballasted but they last 2x as long which means the external are a whole lot cheaper in the long run. So the self ballasted should be replace every 6 mos and the external ballasted should be replaced every 12 mos. Now if you have a meter you can keep the bulb as long as it is giving off the right amount of UVB.
The ballast is warranteed for 2 years (minimum length of time you will be able to use it before buying a new one)
Over the 2 year period you will spend a total of $134.95 for the EB--1 EB kit $85 ($75 + $10 S/H) + $49.95 ($39.95 + $10 S/H).
If using the SB during that same period you will spend $199.80--4 x $49.95 ($39.95 + 10 S/H). Almost a $65 savings. Even if you buy through someone else and don't pay the shipping you still pay $159.80 (you don't get the same great customer service though) but that is still almost a $25 difference.
Now if the ballast lasts longer than the warrantee then the savings continue to add up.
Daylight Savings Time
I use timers and so do not need to be around when the lights go on or off. I have just set them and do not change them given that they do not need to go to work or school at a certain time each day like us humans. Now if you want to have a longer photoperiod during the longer days then you can have them come on earlier and turn off later. Similiar to the sun coming up earlier and going down later. But I do that based on the time of sunset and sunrise.

wow it's nice to see people that know their lighting. At other sites--I find myself begging people to buy good MVB's then explaining over and over again why. Usually out of 10 I get maybe 6 to buy a megayray. Then there are usually people that will go out and buy a stupid slimline or something that I just got finished explaining not to buy---then they disappear--and I can't help but wonder about their poor beardies or iguanas

Nicole,
I'm pretty sure it is. He is everywhere it seems. I know him from the Green Iguana Society Message Board.
Him and Darry over at GIS convinced me to buy the EB kit. I had the Powersun by ZooMed but wasn't satisfied. But what really convinced me was when after I bought my first setup the way Baby and Dragon reacted. I kept the Powersun as a second basking site but they only wanted the MegaRay. That was the ultimate recommendation for me. So I bought a second set up.
I didn't buy the heat projector but that was because I already have a heating panel that gives all the heat I need. I have also talked to Bob a few times and that really got me convinced. His company in my opinion has the best customer service.

Does it really seem that way or is it that I use my name as my screen name wherever I go? Now I feel self-conscious. I'm going to go hide in Pogo for a while under a false name. LOL Really though, while it seems I am everywhere, and probably am active at a good number of places; It all started with the GIS. Everything I do and everywhere I go is linked back to the GIS in some way. And Marie- I could say the same about you at this point. LOL

You are out there helping so many. I know you, Darry, and Bob were helpful when Baby fractured her back, and Dragon was showing signs of Kidney failure. Marie

Hi Dragon. Chica will probably get a MegaRay, and when I order it, I'll be sure to tell them you sent me! Thanks! Silly Iguana... don't you know that EB means External Ballast, and SB means Self (built-in) Ballast?

Darn it.. koffee you beat me to it! Thank you Dragon! My igs all have Mega Ray bulbs, though I opted for the SB version because of the heat output. They have lasted well beyond the 6 month warranty and we are very pleased. Yes, EB is externally ballasted and SB is self ballasted.
