I just ordered my Mega Ray. I got the Mega ray self ballasted (sb) 100 watt flood lamp. Correct me if im wrong but these dont need special ballast do they? Or will the fit in any ballast.

The SB (self ballasted) does not need any seperate ballast. You just need an ordinary clamp dome lamp that has a ceramic socket. You would need this with the EB (external ballasted) too. I wouldn't buy the dome from a petstore though. They are way overpriced. You can get a better quality one for less money at Lowe's, HomeDepot, WalMart, or any home improvement store. I also think you can get one even cheaper at farm suppliers--brooder lamps. The SB will give heat also. Be sure that the temps are correct. The thing to remember about the SB is that they are more sensitive to jostling so make sure it is mounted so that it wont be bothered easily. Also when turned off do not turn it back on for at least 15 minutes. Do not move it until it cools too. These will need to replaced every 6 months instead of every year too unless you get a UVB meter to measure the output You may want to consider getting EB in the future because they are more economical in the long run since once you buy the kit you only replace the bulbs once a year instead of 2x a year. The kit pays for itself within the 1st year. The price of 2 SB bulbs is a little under $80 plus shipping twice. The price for the kit is $75 (bulb lasts 1 year) plus shipping once. And the EB is a sturdier bulb because the internal ballast makes SBs more fragile. But like fluorescents you need external heat with the EBs. I think you made a great chose choosing the MegaRay and if you bought it from ReptileUV, you will get the best customer service anywhere.

Compared to other UVB bulbs how much better is the megaray? I mean right now I have a 24" reptisun 10.0 over my dragons. Should I see my dragons brighten a bit or will they show no change at all?

Hey there Zach! Do you have a megaray for Nana? I hope you do she will show so much improvement with one of these bulbs. RZ showed magnificent improvement with hers. YOu can see her before during and now shots under the Iguana part of the site. Its says "its been a year for RZ" These bulbs are great. The reptisun and reptiglo's also help a lot with colour. You'd have to ask Steven about this. I have never had the privlidge to have a beardie yet. Hope things are going well with them
