I have been keeping tabs on this thread of discussion, as I knew it could become heated. However I think you posted a valid discussion topic and one that the beginner or novice herpers might not know about. When a person goes to the pet store to start picking up things for their reptiles they are often lead to a whole collection of things that are less than useful i.e. improper substrates, heat rocks etc. With research they could find the answers and find that some advice they have received has been less than accurate. This is a site we hope they can come to for learning about the right things and other options open to them.
We have had some very thoughtful and well-worded statements, as well as informed opinions. I appreciate Marie’s effort to stimulate this thread by asking outside sources, then reporting back their comments. As well as having Dominick come in and post his comments. It is all very interesting to read and hear more about. I knew from the start D3 was not the way to go, but this type of discussion emphasizes that point and it brings to light some of the reasons for choosing not to use products like that instead of offering natural light or UVB from light sources.
So thank you for posting the start of the discussion and thank you to those who have participated thus far in an informative manner, and to those to come who may share their opinions and knowledge as well…
Elizabeth

Wow this was a very interesting topic and I want to thank Lou for bringing it up and thank every one for the respectful responses. As you all know I was on vacation when this thread appeared so I didn’t really get a chance to answer on it.
Well when I started this forum I wanted it to be an open forum where people could come and talk about things such as this and give opinions even if you, me, or Joe blow down the street agreed or not. And I have seen now it can work and there can be a very respectful response from people here on the forum and I want to thank the people on the forum for their respect and the information that was giving. I sure Lou got the information she was looking for and I hope it helped.
Now for me on this subject
I have read the subject on the AIML I believe it was and I did not agree with it for one reason there was not enough information on it and the person that brought it up was not giving all that much information about it.
When I got into sun basking reptiles (yes Sun Basking--that means Sun), I read a lot and I am still reading today because as Dominick and Marie and a couple of others have pointed out the information changes every day, month, year. When I seen this thread I knew what Lou was talking about and in the UK they do things a little different then the US. This I do know. But for the Reptiles that need the Sun, I still believe the Sun is the best and if not something close to the Sun--a Bulb.
When it comes to experimenting with the D3 that the reptile is supposed to produce for it self I have to draw the line. We are not God! And the information out there about Vit. D3 supplement is not good enough for me to use or to consider using. Like some of you said why change something that been happening for years with out our help.
So until the information and facts on this subject is more clear then I will stick to the Sun or the Bulb and give them (Reptiles) a chance to produce their own D3. I believe that is best for now.
If you think about it, it is like getting a shot or a drop or a pill of Vit C instead of just drinking a glass of orange juice. The Drop, Shot, or pill is less expensive than drinking a glass of Orange Juice and it takes less time to do but there is too much chemical enhanced products out there already I do not think we need anymore for us or our animals--reptile or mammal.
All I am trying to say is maybe we should take a page out of a Sun Basking Reptiles life and let the foods we eat produce the vitamins that we need, instead of taking a pill or a shot or a drop. I believe the same should go with that reptile. In this fast pace society, we are all in a hurry! Lets slow down a little bit and look at things around us. I think we will all be better off.
So I want to thank the people on here for there insight on this subject and I hope we have shed some light on this subject. In the beginning of this thread Lou said, “You can delete this if you want to.” For me I do not think it should be, for the simple reason there was a lot of Good Information passed on both sides of the pond LOL!!!!!
So again I want to Thank everyone for the respect that was given here in answering the way you answered. And I hope we can have more discussions like this in the near future!
Thanks Patrick
