Hi all, sorry its been a few weeks sice I posted over here, I have been super busy with GracefulDragons and taking care of Pooka (she had lizard indigestion for a few days). Anyhow, I got my Megaray yesterday (YAY) When I got home I tore it open and set it up for Pooka. What I would like to know is if I set it up right? The bulb face is about 18 inches from the floor of the viv and the water dragon seems to have a preference for the rock right underneath the focal point of the bulb. The distance from the top of the rock to the face of the bulb is 15 Inches. (rock is about 1.5-2 inches off the floor of the viv) The branches in this picture actually are not even under the lamp hood from front to back (they appear to be right under it when viewing from this angle but don't actually even come right until they are almost to the glass). I have NOT burned the bulb in seperately as I didn't hear the suggestion untill after I set up the light and the rateing written on the bulb was 340. The basking temp on the rock under the focal point of the megarya is 85. Any thoughts suggestions warnings? I just need to make sure I am not setting this up in a way that can hurt Pooka. Here is some visual help. How the bulb is setup: (megaray is the white lighted bulb to the left in the pic)

Thats cool! Those bulbs are good! I use the Powersun MVB's and Reptisun 5.0 for all my dragons. But I have heard good things about the MegaRay.

Hey Steve
They are the best Bulb out there I have 3 for my iguanas and they love them And they keep the UV going for a long time better then the powersuns and Reptisuns 5.0 I still have them to in certain places but the MR’S are the best

It was the external ballast. The ballast box is down by my light timer and the dome light is plugged into it. the light profile falls over the regular basking spot but the main focus point of the light profile falls on a rock in middle of the cage. I have caught Pooka basking on that rock 2 or 3 times since I hooked the light up, apparenly she likes it. So far so good. I plan on observing her for the rest of the week then writing up a testimonial for bobmac & co. Aside from a delay in shipping because of a problem getting ballast boxes my experience with them was very good, and so far I am happy with the light, I just wish I had a solarmeter so I I could see just HOW much better the MR are.

When I talked to Bob about Baby not lying directly under the light except for her tail, he told me that they self regulate their UVB like they self regulate their temperatures so Baby was still getting the UVB she needed. She must have gotten enough to heal her back because she is now starting to climb up to the top shelf at bedtime again. If Pooka likes the rock then she probably is getting the right amount of UVB there. And if you are not sure you can always call or email him and ask questions. They are busy but if so will get back to you.

Congratulations Pooka and welcome to the Mega-Ray revolution! LOL
Set up looks fine. AS mentioned the creatures will self-regulate the amount of UVB they need. Right now you are likely seeing that creatures will seek out strong UVB whenever possible. This was demonstrated in Gerhmann's scientific study of spiney-tails.
Be sure your light timer is BEFOREthe ballast box. When not in use, it is important to have the ballast box turned off or it will prematuraly burn out.
"Burning in" is not really necessary with Mega-Ray. The decay rate is so low (10% on average) that it makes little difference.
Best wishes to you and the dragons as they enjoy the life-giving benefits of the Mega-Ray line of Mercury Vapor lamps.

Yepper I have the timer on the wall and everything comes after it, so no worries there. Thanks everyone, she is liking the MR alot. She will flop out under it for a bit then run around then flop under the regular light for a while then wanna go play then find her way back to the MR. Her color is getting a more vibrant green and the external ballasted bulb puts out just enough heat that I don't need a heat bulb on that side of the tank. All in all I am a very satisfied customer.
