Tokay Gecko Care Sheet
INTRODUCTION:Tokay Geckos are a large and attractively-colored and are native to southern and southeastern Asia. Tokay Geckos are one of the largest gecko species in the world with lengths of 12 inches and over common.
LIGHTING AND HEATING: Tokay Geckos are nocturnal and dont require any UVB or bright lights. The best way to heat tokays is with infared or other nocturnal bulbs that are sold for heating and veiwing nocturnal reptiles. Tokays are comfortable with temperatures from 75-90 dergrees and the basking area under the hots spot should be 95-100 degrees.
HOUSING AND SUBSTRATES: Tokays are aboreal geckos and prefer a taller rather then longer cage. For one tokay I wouldnt go with anything smaller then a 20 high but bigger is always better for tokays. I keep a pair in a 29 gallon but would like to go bigger eventually. Its important to have a screen cover or some type of good cover because tokays will threw any holes. Substrates are always a big debate with tokays like leopard geckos. Some people say the best is the most natural and others say go with whats safest not the best looking. I personally like whats best looking but only if its safe. I have tryed a few different substrates and personally find the least attractive the best and safest. I reccomend newspaper, paper towels,or reptile carpet if you want the safest thing.
FEEDING and WATER: Tokay Geckos can eat a variety of things from, crickets, mealworms, superworms, wax worms, pinkys, and roaches. I feed mine mainly crickets and sometimes superworms. Wax worms and pinkys are very fattening and are only good as a treat. The crickets, mealies, supers, should be dusted with a calcium powder with vitmain D3 in it atleast once a week. Tokays very rarely drink out of a standing water dish and mainly drink off the leaves and the glass, so misting atleast once daily is a must to allow them to drink and it also helps with the humidity. Mist the whole cage good atleast once a day.
HANDELING: Tokays are known for there aggressive dispositions and painful bites, so handeling is not reccomend. Most are wild caught and will stress when handeled and bite and not let go. They have little sharp teeth and a very strong jaw pressure. If you want to try to get a tame one then look into a captive bred one but they are hard to find and more expensive. I dont reccomend handeling because it causes alot of stress.
CONCLUSION: Tokay geckos are beutiful and fun to watch geckos and are one of my personal favorites. If you want a awesome gecko to just look at then a tokay is perfect for you
