Well, I came to this site through Marie on the Green Ig society site and I am excited to have another place to go and discuss, learn and see other igs! I got my little man for my husband about a month ago from some college kids who were going to study abroad. They gave us his whole setup for free. I went and got him as a surprise for my husband. I told him this was all him and I wanted nothing to do with little Raul. As the days/weeks went by, I started researching him and found him to be completely fascinating! We realized that this poor little guy was not being properly cared for and we went to work to correct the problem! His cage that he came with has been replaced with a new PALACE and his diet of lettuce has been replaced with collard greens, mustard greens, squash, zucchini, watermelon, apples..... his first vet apt was Tuesday and he did great! He weighs 1/4 lb and the vet estimates that he is approximately 1-2 years old. The vet said he is malnourished but that that should change very quickly! He has been confirmed a male and I am a little nervous to see what happens during his "season"! He is a very wild little guy, but we are definatly seeing progress everyday! We also have two boxers-Bailey and Roxayn- who I definatly cannot forget to mention for they are also my babies! Here are photos of all of my furry and not so furry babies... Bailey: A 3 1/2 year old male boxer--a true mommas boy! Roxayn: A 2 year old female boxer--watch out for this one! She will LICK you to death! And of couse...Raul: A 1-2 year old green Iguana--A holy terror working on trusting very large humans!

These green beast do seem to worm their way into your heart. Glad you found the GIS. That is one of the best sites out there if not the best. Many of us started out there and always go back no matter how many others we find. You have been making great at improving his life. Curious what is his UVB lighting? Don't recall right now. Which you live in San Diego so you have access to the best UVB almost year round. I do miss that about living there. Just make sure to use a leash or sun cage. But I switched to the second best UVB source and bought a UVB to make sure they are getting good levels. The MegaRays are the second best source. I think you are going to my old vet Dr. Cecil. I really liked him. He cared for Dragon & Baby since their spays in 98. If he remembers Dragon & Baby, tell him they are doing really good. Just Dragon is not eating like I want but that has been a constant struggle with her. The best thing to do with Raul is handle him as much as possible while he is small. Then most likely he will be manageable. Some do get unhandable and have to be grounded to their enclosure. But many just get grouchy. There are things that can help such as luvsocks or stuff animals (w/o loose things). Each iguana is different and you really wont know for sure until you cross that bridge. Bailey and Roxayn are so very adorable. They look like they are spoiled and enjoying life. We love all animals here. Hope to see them more as time passes. Take a look around. We have weekly Chats. Also there are a few contests going on. The game contest just started so feel free to jump in. The submissions for the picture contest will be accepted for another 2 weeks so there is plenty of time to enter still. You can read up on the contests in the announcements. Hope you enjoy forum. Ask any questions and make any suggestions. The forum is for the members.

Raul has one flood UVA light at the top of his enclosure and a florecent UVB/UVA light right next to his basking shelf...soon to come...two mega ray flood UVB lights to replace the florecent light and we would like to put in an additional basking shelf. Lately the weather has been really nice, so we are trying to get him outside more, but the only outside cage we have is his old cage wihich he really seems to hate! Future plans are in the works to build an outdoor sunning cage made of PVC piping that can connect to the window of the house. Then we will modify his indoor enclosure to allow anytime access to the outdoor sunning cage! (This will be a while though, as funds are low after constructing the indoor enclosure!) Currently, we are working on getting the megaray UVB's and constructing a pond with a waterfall to produce more humity and moving water in hopes that he will drink. The only time I have seen him drink water is in the shower off of my arm. That makes me nervous about dehydration. I have never seen him drink in the bath or out of his water dish. I have, however, seen him POOP in the water dish or just sit in it! (there are 2 small dishes, so him pooping in it is wierd. Especiallt since there is a kitty litter pan in there full of water!) Any advise or suggestions are greatly welcomed! Do you think the lighting is good?? (sorry-I ramble when it comes to any of my babies!)

The MegaRays are very best in my opinion. That is all I will use unless there is an emergency. I have seen my iguanas drink but they don't do it often. I stand my greens up like flowers in water overnight so they absorb extra water. Then I wet the greens before serving them. I also use a tablesthingy of RepCal food pellets soaked so they are double in size. They act like sponges and gets extra water in your iguana. The color and smell acts like a appetite stimulant. It also adds extra vitamins/minerals. No other supplement is not necessary except maybe a probiotic.
Water is attactive to them for pooping. They sometimes don't distinguish between a waterbowl or tub. But I just had a thought we go to the bathroom in a bowl instead of a tub. Huff used to prop himself on the edges of a box that had the pillowcase he was stuffed in during the trip across country to poop on it. Also when I took my girls out to the Kmart parking lot to bask everyday, they would do their poop dance and wait for me to lift their tail. Then they would poop and I held their tail until they cleared the poop spot. They had me well trained. Maybe some don't want their vent touching what they are pooping on or in. That isn't a fact. Just my own theory.

You are the hatchling not Raul. Just a category based on how active you have been up to this point. Your category changes the more you post. Sorry for the confusion. Patrick's is the one that set up those so it is his fault. It is always the man's fault. LOL But you can change your profile by clicking the profile button under the site picture. Then choose modify profile. You can add a signature there if you choose there.

Okay! I'm the hatchling! That's funny! A great way of looking at it!! I would love to get Raul trained to go potty in the tub that is in his enclosure. He goes almost every time when we bathe/shower him. I will get some of the RepCal pellets. That's a great idea. We do spray down his food before feeding too. We are going to put a waterfall/pond in there as I read they like moving water ...true?? I'm not sure how that will work...today in the shower he tried to climb up the shower stream!!! As soon as the stream hits him he tries to climb up it...funny, but also hurts me!!!

Yes I heard that too. But Raul may not take to it at first. They sometimes react badly to even good change. But he should do fine once he is used to it. But it can be high maintenance.
