The babies arn't mine to keep! THey'll be heading into the lake on a journey after there born, in about 9 - 18 weeks they will be hatching So that will be cool, hopefully I can catch them coming out and take some pictures. I may steal an egg if I want another snapper. Not too sure at this point though. Probably not as they are having a hard time around here right now. Too many people eating turtle soup and killing pregnant turtles and eating the eggs to. So we'll see what happens

Nice photos of the snapping turtle. I never get to see one that big, especially in my yard. Too far away from the pond, even with all the rain we had.
Hope no destroys the eggs after all the hard work the big girl went through.

hey. i would just like to share a picture of my snapper Gilligan. I found him almost froze to death about a year and a half ago in the slush in my driveway. but i took him to the vet and things quickly turned out for the best. although he is partially blind in one eye from it being frozen. he also has a bit of trouble with his joints, and his water must be kept at a higher temp. then normal to help them. this is a picture of him about 6 months ago, ( taken with a cell phone so sorry for it not being that good). he is sleeping in the sun on the highest rock in his cage.. not sure how he got up there.. but my friends didnt beleive me that snappers basked.. which is why i took the picture. i have another snapper that is only abotu 1.5 inches. ive only had it for a few weeks. i rescued it from a dried up pond along with 6 baby painters and 4 other snappers. there were a whole bunch of others that were already dead. ... it was too late for them. once i snap a picture of him/her i plan to post them. beautiful pictures by the way. i am absolutely amazed by snappers... they have such disposition!

Good job in rescuing those turtles. It's nice to see people who think more of the animal than themselves.
I too rescued a turtle from the road and when I mentioned this fact on my local herp clubs board I was slammed for doing so and placing it a safe area. Their train of though was to leave it in it's own area and let the turtle take it's chances.
This is the only club in Maine and I won't renew my membership next year. I don't care what they say I would save the animals life first and foremost.

What a cute little guy, looks like he is going to have problems with his legs. But glad you found him. I don't believe what a lot of people who supposidly love animals say or do to them. If I see a turtle crossing a busy street I will stop and move him off or stop traffic to let it go to where its going. I was driving my bf to work last week and there was a snapper as big as a 50 Gallon Drum lid and it was on the side of the road. I told him if it was still there on my way back I was going to move him/her across. But he had already made it across or went back the other way in 15 minutes. Some people would rather let fate take over, but fate doesn't take into consideration cars, trucks, semi's and inconsiderate people. I would have done the same thing. Good luck with them all, those are a lot of turtles to be keeping though!

This is kinda a delayed reply.. but i didnt realise that people replied for a long time. Anywho.... when i said i rescued it along with 6 painters and 4 other snappers, i didnt mean i kept them all!! Holy cow! that would be a little too much to handle. I released the other snappers and painters in a nearby lake that is highly sucluded from people. I only kept one of the baby snappers i saved. by the way, the little guy has already grown to almost 2.5inches.. he's growing fast!
