That set up sounds good. My neice has a RES for the past 10 years. They don't believe in UV lighting at all. But there turtle is in great shape! He is pretty big. When she was 3 she got him and he was the size of a loonie (canadian $1.00 coin) Now he's the size of a dinner plate.
THey give him the turtle pellets and whatever they catch around the house. And with an old farm house, you catch stuff all year long!
But what you have sounds great for now for the size of them. There turtle loves to be taken outside. Even likes baths with the waterhose when its warm out. They have the Lexus of waterhose's its hooked up to warm water not cold! So that makes all the difference I think!
Good luck with them and we would love to see some photos!

:(ace, i have had my 2 red sliders for almost two years now and it sounds like you have pretty much everything you need, but i have to agree they love the sun light! i put mine outside everyday that its warm in a plastic pool, they stay up on the rocks in the sun more than they do in the water. just watch for not so sweet birds and other four legged critters. i hope you enjoy your res the way i have mine! good luck to ya!

That was a close call, those darn crows!
I have always wanted a pet crow. We've rescued a red tailed hawk before but he got poisoned and we kept him till he died cauz he couldn't fly anymore. He was great, but his claws were very very sharp.
Also we've raised a few possums. My brother found a baby one in his toolbox one day when he was at work. Must have fell off the mother when she was walking on it or something. But he raised it and then let it go. He gave it the least amount of human contact as he could. So it was afraid of people.
But good job on chasing them away dad! Keep those little guys safe.

I want an Australian Flying fox. They are a fruit bat from Australia with a 5 foot wingspan. I wish I didn't fall in love with such rare and illgeal species... Two of my favorite reptiles are Green geckos and Snail-Eating turtles, both are rare, expensive, and protected. Sounds great. Good job.

Ahh that is a sad story. I have a story like that. My brother brought me this one chick one time. His mom abandoned him and my brother told me to raise it. Well I held the darn thing all night and then I started to get itcy durning the night. Well needless to say the chick had chicken mites, and they were on me! I was soooo Ichy I put the chick back in the cage with a towel and a heat pad, the next day I woke up and it was dead. Guess it missed actually being against something alive. I cried so much and said I should have just lived with the ichy mites and the chick wouldn't be dead. I felt so bad cauz of that. But I'm glad you got over it and you will know better next time for sure

I know its been a few years since this has been posted on, but just in case anybody reads this, i wanted to say that with RES turtles is good to feed them a lot of protein when theyre young, but as they get older they fall into more of a vegetarian pattern. You should vary their food (even when theyre young) with carrots, darker lettuce like romain (the light is more like candy for them), squash, red bell pepper, and other veggies. When theyre young you can feed them bugs for protein, but make sure the bugs havent come in contact with pesticides or anything like that or itll harm your turtle. These turtles can live up to 4 years if taken care of properly, and theyre great pets I have two beautiful baby turtles of my own, and cant wait until they grow up!
