We picked up a Ball Python today, but we don't know its gender. We have a feeling its a female because we always end up with females for some reason.

Congrats on the new snake! Ball pythons are great snakes! I dont know if its just the picture, but he/she looks alittle on the skinny side, hopefully you fatten her/him up! I'm sure you will do a great job!

Thanks. She isn't too skinny, but she is skinny. We do have to fatten her up. She has not even eaten yet. She is about ready to eat though. We think she has had her first shed, not exactly sure on that. We are going to see if she will eat tonight.

That is once cute little snake! I love the ball pythons heads they are soooo cute I also agree that, that snake is a bit on the skinny side. But should fill out in no time One way to tell the sex of a ball python is behind there vent some of them have these little things called spurs. These are the females. There tails tend to be shorter and a bit fatter than the males tail. The spurs look like two little cat nails that stick out of the skin. You should be able to see them or feel them. But I'm not exactly sure at what age they come out or when you can tell. But I will find out. www.tetra-fish.com/fauna/ballpython.aspxSexing a Ball Python is relatively easy. Like all pythons and boas, they have anal spurs. These claw-like structures are about 2" - 3" from the tip of the tail. Males have longer spurs than females. The spurs are thought to be evolutionary remnants of hind legs. Males also tend to have smaller heads than females. Mating usually requires a mild cooling or partial hibernation period. The average clutch size is 4 - 10 eggs and average incubation period is 90 days/me That site gives the basic information on balls or royal pythons Good luck fattening it up Steph
