For a while now, I have wanted to breed different types of reptiles and also be a shelter for unwanted reptiles, but I do not have the cash to do so. Does anyone know anything about getting a government grant? Like, who to contact and how to write a grant proposal?

the place to start would be looking into your states regulations and guidelines most have web sites you can get quite a bit of info off of... Another idea would be to take a look at local rescues and breeders and talk with them on the things you can do to get started... the actual rescue part could come under the not for profit possibly but there is a lot that goes into that as well... It may even be advisable to contact a lawyer, maybe one who does a free consulation.

I know that most major corporations allocate a set amount each year that they give to charities or any other form of dumping money that they can write off on their taxes. A few years back I attempted to get a grant to start my business which was to have 10% of proceeds to be donated to Childerens Mercy. My proposal included a five year plan backed by other related businesses in the area, a detailed inventory of the products needed, expected maintainence expences, overhead expences, number of employees and their income, as well as a few other details to help the donners make their decision. I researched for companies that donated the prior year, determined the appropriate contacts within those comanies and mailed out four hundered proposals. I had three replies, one of which gave me $5,000 the other two said I contacted them to close to the close of escro and that I should contact them back the following year, when I did I got the same reply. I was after $120000 and needless to say I didn't get close. The $5000 went to the local clinic after getting permission from the donner. Not trying to discourage you but unfortunitly your not the only one trying to get a grant and most of the donners just repeat their donations to their last recipient. Not too many corp. have the time to read all of their mail, hence the reason I only recieved three replies. I've talked to others who say its in the numbers and they have sent out thousands of proposals and apparently recieved enough replies to accomidate their needs. At 40c per proposal I just dont have that much to invest in a possibility. Another thing to take in to concideration is, is there enough pet stores that will be willing to purchase your critters and will it be on a large enough of a scale to compensate for all of your overhead expences. Too many breeders cut corners to make it affordable which isn't fair to the animal, the pet store, or the costumer. There is also licenses required for many of the exotics, several of which require vets be on staff and regular facility check-ups; all of which increase overhead expences. I simply suggest to research before you get started, make sure your not beyond your means and you keep the animals interest above financial interests. Best of luck and keep us posted on your progress.
