Common Name: Goliath BirdEater Scientific Name: Theraphosa blondi Type: Terrestrial Adult Size: 9-11 inches Temperature: Like most other tarantulas, room temperature works just fine. Between 70-80degrees. Humidity: Theraphosa blondi require HIGH humidity inorder to survive. Anything under 80% humidity is a danger zone. Usually keeping the substrate moist and providing a large water dish will keep the humidity up enough. This species tends to have a hard time with molting and without high enough himidity, they will die. Temperament: Territorial and defensive. Its not advised to hold this species due to their appetite and their defensive nature. Just remember, as adults their fangs get around 1" long. Speed: Medium Diet: Even as newly molted spiderlings, they can take down adult crickets. As adults you can feed them large roaches. Housing: Spiderlings can usually be kept in small deli containers or kritter keepers, subadults can be kept in shoe box sized sterilite containers, and large adults can be kept in 15-20gal tanks. Substrate: peat moss or peat/soil mix. Remember that these are very heavy bodied tarantulas. Make sure that the substrate reaches no futher from the top of the tank than the length of the spider thats living in it. Even a small fall can cause a ruptured abdomine. Additional info: Make sure to provide a hide for your tarantula to escape to. This species has extremely irritating uritacting hairs that is close to unbareable. Always remember, no matter how cute or cuddley they may look at the time, kissing your T. blondi is not advised.
