Rex is growing out of his cage. I would rather make one than buy one. Does anyone have some advice on how to make a fairly big but somewhat cheap cage. I've been thinking of getting a wardrobe gutting it and putting mesh on the front. Anyone do this?

it depends on what you want to call cheap i spent easy 60 bucks on stuff to build my cage for godzilla between the plexy glass, wood and the screening, but yeah i'm pretty sure you can use an old wardrobe, but you would have to get some screening and some plexy glass for the parts of the cage ... I hope this helps a little

I have found, since I'm no good at all with making things with hammers and nails, that using old furniture was the best solution to a tank for Sir Emmy. I got two kerio cabinets relatively cheap and we've modified them into a tank for our ig. Originally we had Sir Emmy in one, but he outgrew it's depth quickly, so we took the back off both cabinets, sliding one mirror to the front of one cabinet and then putting them back to back. It doubled the size of his enclosure, but the glass and wood were already in place. We took one pane of glass from the door and replaced it with animal screen. Animal screen is thicker and more durable, but doesn't have the same cutting power a regular screen. It's made so that animals can jump up on it without breaking it. Sir Emmy uses it to climb up the door and then jump down. Anyway, I hope this helps. I have some pictures through out the forums of his enclosure.

Some people have also been able to sacrifice---err...donate their closet to their ig, too. If you can do with one that's another option and the only cost would be accessories...;-D

I have thought about giving him my closet but I don't own the house I am living in. I would be perfect too because it has nice shelves in it and a light bulb on top. I just don't think my landlord you be too happy with me if I did that though. For now, until I can build something I am letting him roam around my sons room during the day and he sleeps in his cage at night. He seems to like the freedom he has and will make his way back to his cage most nights. He also likes it when I put his cage outside and he can get some sun.

Hey Tonia, It is actually pretty cheap to get someone you know to build you an enclosure or at least help you build one. If you go to the hardware store and tell them what you want then they should be able to tell you how much of everything you will need. Free roaming is ok as long as he is going in his basking area. It is VERY important for him to get his 12 hours of sunlight with the UVA/UVB bulbs inside or to get 2 hours of sun outside plus the rest of the time awake under bulbs. When you are putting him in the sun, make sure he has somewhere to go to be in the shade to cool down. Too much heat can kill and iguana as well. If you have any other questions let us know He was the one with the abcess on his face right? How is he doing? did everything heal properly? Hope to hear back

Yes! The very same one. The picture I am posting I just took today. As you can see he healed up rather nicely. Since posting I have set up a shelf for him to bask on. It has a UVB light on it so he is getting heat and light. On good days I put him in his outside which is half covered so he can get some shade. I have also bought him a kiddie pool and he just loves it. The sun warms the water in the pool nicely. He is very nosy and likes to roam into the living room to see what I'm doing. In the pic he is on the arm of the couch trying to see what I'm up too. I like to show him Iguana's on you tube. He likes to head bop at them. Just so they know he is the King! His nose is a little scratched up from banging his nose against his cage trying to chase the dog. He really doesn't like him. It's starting to heal up now.

Hi there!
Good good he is looking pretty good! Thats the scar from the abcess under his mouth like 1/4 of an inch? Like a red mark? If it is its looking great! Too bad about his nose though, hopefully you'll be able to keep that dog away from him to ensure he won't get another infection from scraping up his nose. Dogs are little stinkers sometimes when they know another animal doesn't like them. Always being nosey!
He does look really good so keep up the good work!! I'd like to see some pictures of him in the pool! that would be cute.

You can tell, he feels a lot better too. His appetite has return, and he is back to eating normally. Yes the mark you see is where it was. It is almost completely healed. He's not in a cage anymore, I've set up a shelf for him in my son's room and I try to keep the door shut, but you know how kids are. Rex always knows when the door is open and he goes out to be nosy. Rex is paying Rocky back for tormenting him. Rex will chase him and Rocky is scared of him. It's so funny too see an Iguana chasing a dog and the dog running away. I don't think Rocky will mess with him anymore. I put some bacitracin on his nose to help it heal and I keep it clean. I will put some pics up of him in his pool. He loves it!
