i have a question, I adopted beardy from petco last month and it had a little bit of twitching in his legs. they took it to the vet and vet couldn't find any thing major with it but they couldn't sell it cause of its twitching so i got him, now for my question recently he began to have paralysis in his back legs and now its moving up to his front legs i set up an appointment for Friday at the vet. i looked it up and all signs point towards impaction Ive been drop feeding it liquid baby food mixed with warm water. I feed him crickets but might have been to big for him and got impacted. I have the uva and uvb set up so temp is good . he licks off the food from the syringe and i give him a soak in warm water to warm his belly up to see if that can release it. he pooped 2 times last night and it didn't seam compacted it was black with a white tube which is his urine. So he must be passing stuff. I'm hoping is MBD Ive been giving him calcium 2 times a week. please if any one has any info on this condition it would be helpful thanks Sandor

Hello there,
This is a serious thing and needs to be delt with asap... like tomorrow. Paralysis in ANY animal/human is not a good thing. And many times it is not reverseable.
I have experiance in paralysis as my iguana is half paralyzed. She has MBD. The symptoms you are describing in my opinion are MBD symptoms, ranging into the severe end of them. I have never had an animal that has had an impaction... so I only know the symptoms I read. Is he/she able to walk, hold up its own body weight, climb or anything like that before the paralysis?
I was reading about symptoms of an impaction and some of the symptoms are similar. Impaction is also very serious and can kill an animal in a matter of days. It sometimes can happen very slowly over a period of time... depends on how much of the impaction cause was digested at each time.
Hopefully you can get into the vet as soon as possible. If not with that vet maybe see if you can get into another one. It is really important that you get it taken care of as soon as possible.
Let us know how you and your little guy/girl make out!

Hello That is great you got your guy in there!! He appreciates it! Calcium deficiency's come about slowly... if the animal doesn't get enough calcium and doesn't have UV it suffers a severe chance of ending up dead in a short period of time. A horrible death also. UV and calcium go hand in hand... if you have no UV rays... which produce vitamin D then calcium doesn't get digested or absorbed. Its not something that happens over night. Its a process that is started then not caught early enough and progress's from there. The tube flaurescent lights need to be 12" from your beardie for them to be benifit from them. The further away the less UV he gets and the cycle is on going from there. (do not put the bulb any closer than 12" as it does get hot and your animal could suffer burns from it) Offering calcium dusted crickets is a good part of the diet and vitamin regimen, BUT the UV ties in with that to make it actually useful. I'm glad you were able to get him in faster. Treatment when they get that advanced is imperative to TRY and reduce future deformation. So be sure you always keep your bulbs up to date (flaurescents change ever 6 months) The bulbs that look like regular light bulbs do not produce UV! so do not use these. Megarays are a wonderful bulb and last one full year with a gaurentee. So they are deffinatly worth the money spent. Anything else you wanted to know or ask feel free. Is the calcium a liquid, shot or powder? Keep us updated on the little guys/girls progress....

yeah the calcium is liquid. i did everything right its when i got him from petco he had twitching in his legs and was missing some of his toes on his front leg. when petco gave him to me they told me they took him to the vet and found nothing wrong with him. so i adopted him, and i gave him calcium with his crickets he was doing good but all of a sudden his back legs was limp thats when i contacted the vet. and I did have a UVB and A UVA on him the UVB wasnt that old a few months but i gaught another one a little bit stronger Desert series 50 wich i got him in a 10 gal and its 12in in hight wich is well in the range. i gave him anothe dose of calcium when i got home tonight and he seams to be moving his front legs and moving around the tank. i will keep you updated on his progress in the weeks . thanks zilla for you fast responce and help
