I have some sort of a virus and I do not know if I should be handling the Iggy's or not. I have not been doing it for fear of getting them sick. I do not want to lose the socialization that we have been working on. Any ideas?

I know that there are certain diseases we can get from them. I would think that they might be able to contract certain diseases or infections from us but do not know. I would think the same procedures we use to protect ourselves from catching something from them would protect them from catching something from us also--good hygeine like washing your hands constantly. But I am not positive. The best thing though would be give a call to your vet and ask. I will try to find something about it. Do you know what you have?--that would help. I think I heard they can not catch a cold from us. If you don't know what you have you may want to see a doctor yourself.

I went to the doctor and they told me they think I have a virus but nothing defiant. I have been running a high fever 101-104 degrees congestion and extremely weak muscles. When they tried to take my blood pressure They could not find it as I was to dehydrated. I have not thrown up or had any other problems. I have since then gotten myself re-hydrated and taking the drugs they gave me and I have been feeling better but I am still running fever but it is lower. I have been at 100 degrees all day. I can try to contact my vet but being a holiday weekend I do not think I will have much luck. I will just keep from handling them till I am fully healthy again. I just do not want to lose the little bit of respect I have earned with them

I know they prefer skin to skin contact but just maybe hearing you would be good too... Maybe try one of those little medical masks that they give you in hospitals sometimes and possible even try some latex gloves just to be in with them yet not spreading any germs you have to them... Just in case!!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!!

I wouldn't think they could get too much from us, in the way of breathing and that. Usually virus's are transfered by saliva or mucus. Just like germs, don't wipe your nose then touch them or cough on them or anything like that. You could try the mask, just wash your hands for at least 30 seconds with a good soap and the warmist water you can stand (comfortably!) before and after you handle them. Also if you wipe your nose or anything like that, wash your hands before touching them again. You might just have the flu, its been here in Canada for quite a bit now. The flu season has been late for pretty much everyone. I never get sick to my stomach with the flu, just fever, chills or sweats, dehydrated, weak and achy, headache. Remember drink lots of fluids and Gatoraide is great for keeping you hydrated and not dizzy Hope you feel better and also a speedy recovery!

There are a lot articles abouts pets making humans sick but little about the other way around. Most likely there isn't much is because there hasn't been a problem with it. One quote I did find was this
Kathy Gaughan, assistant professor of clinical sciences at the College of Beterinary Medicine at Kansas State Unversty said,"Pets can definitely make their humans sick." "But, humans making pets sick is unlikely"
So IMO if you follow good hygiene practices then you are probably safe to handle your iguana.
