Hello... my name is Shelli. My boyfriend and I adopted a beautiful female iguana about 2 days ago. We have named her Serenity. She came with her own enclosure (one made from an old dresser), but we are wanting to get/make something bigger for her. The enclosure is not really wide enough front-to-back.
I really want to hold and love on this beautiful girl, but know I can't rush the process since we are new to her, and her new to us. Her previous owners had her since she was a baby. The woman said she didnt have much problem with feeding, only with getting it back in the enclosure. The womans husband never had any problems as he was the one able to spend the most time with the iguana.
My boyfriend is a little freaked out and afraid. He tried to hand feed her andshe started showing signs of "get away from me". I told him though that he needed to be relaxed and just talk to Serenity. That if he gets scared then any reaction she is giving is teaching her to show what intimidates him.
Me, I sit at her cage with the door open a bit. I talk to her in a relaxed tone. I slowly take my hand to her, but if she puffs out or raises up I slowly back off. By doing this I have been able to set and retrieve her food bowl so far. Also, she will eat with me being there I feel like I am making small progress so far, and am getting attached to this girl quickly As I said I cant wait to hold her, but I know that our bond will take some time to make.
My boyfriend is giving a time limit though. Says if she doesnt come around in a couple of weeks then he wants to find her a new home. I want to keep her but dont want to be the only one that she will come to since he (my boyfriend), and my 15 year old son live together.
My son isnt really interested at the moment least he doesnt show it.
But, how do we go about with getting Serenity to bond with both me and my boyfriend, or are these reptiles more a one person animal?!!
