Thats because they can overheat, and they can cause very bad burns. Igs cannot feel the heat before its too late. Its just a good idea not use them to start with.

Hi Jenn
Heat rocks are not good for a lot of reason one is what LadyJack said the other is sometime they well over heat and you do not know it tell it is to late and then it is a trip to the vet to get your guy fixed up. Yes some people still use them but my recommendation is not to use it at all because they can cause serious burns for your guy. Plus going to the vet is not the cheapest thing in the world. Now if you have one then cut off the cord and place it back in the enclosure under the basking lamp Iggys really do love a warm rock and you will not have to worry about burns on your guys stomach if it over heats.

If your little guy likes the rock just stick it under it's basking light... I just recommend to anyone I see with a heat rock for their iguana's saftey, cut the cord, and use it as a plain rock... Along with what Ladyjack and Patrick said part of why they will stay on and not get off is because they cannot fit their entire body on so a part is still cold so they stay on trying to warm their entire body up and most often suffer a burn...
