These are the fatty deposits of the jowls on a mature male ig to the left...female to the right. Forgive Icecube's big nose...; ) She couldn't help it.

Hey Dawn
I would say 3 to 4 yrs they will start developing them but some never do and then some after they reach maturity which is after 2 yrs it really depend on the iguana, whether it is a alpha or a subordinate male. Even some alpha Female will get somewhat of jowls happening on them.

Funny story. I had always thought that Rex, my green iguana was a female. Until one fall two years ago "she" started turning orange. When I picked "her" up "she" grabbed my shirt in "her" mouth and would not let go. So after I got loose I put "her" on the couch and then "she" proceed to hump my couch from one end to the other. I quickly realized that Rex was NOT a girl. lol Now every fall we go through the same thing. I know to leave him alone when he is orange. He is very thingyy!!! Just like a man!

Very funny! Good thing it was only a mouth-full of shirt that first time. Ig bites can sure pack a punch!
