Think I got this one!!!
When they fight the winner turns bright green and the loser turns brown....
Another option is if your green anole is brown all the time it can be a sign of stress

Oh wait I found one more possability when it is out in the morning it will turn brown when it wants to warm up! And the brown absorbes more heat and energy from the sunlight than the green!!

Also, they sometimes turn brown (like golden geckos) when they are cold (but one of my golden geckos ONLY comes out of his log at night and is usually dark black) and bright green when they are hot. I used to have anoles! But I was little, and my mom gave them all away! I asked her about the other day and she said that she had given them away!!!! I can't believe that crap! -collin
