Hey everyone -
Normally I wouldn't post this kind of thing, but I received an email (partially posted below) from a lady in NV who has an Iguana she wants to place. After I responded with several questions, I realized how desperate this Iguana really does need a new home. I did write her back and tell her that she needed to make a lot of changes in the Ig's environment & diet, but I just don't know that she will be able to do that.
Anyway, the question is, is there anyone here that is looking for an Iguana? She emailed me wanting to know if I wanted him (Toby is the Ig's name), and although I would love to take him, realistictly I just don't have the space right now - it would require building an entire enclosure, and that would take everything out of my "Iguana Fund" for vet visits & incidentals.
If anyone is interested, please either post here, or email me at: nanshes@yahoo.com

1st E-Mail:
I'm writing you because I have an iguana that I rescued earlier this year. He is pretty good size, about 6'STL and is fairly tame. His name is Toby. He was an abused iggy - his previous owners made him a druggie, but now that he is drug free he is a good pet. He enjoys sleeping on my aughter's top bunk and usually goes to the window to watch for her when she comes home from school.
My Response & Her Answers:
Maybe you could answer a few more questions for me?
1 - Where do you live? (Curious about shipping etc...)
Reno, NV
2 - Is he a free roamer 24/7 or does he also have an enclosure that he retreats to?
He hangs out in my daughter's bedroom mostly - he sleeps on the top bunk and when it's time for my daughter to come home, he goes to the big window in her room to wait for her.
3 - What has his diet been like?
Lots of veggies, fruits, vienna sausage, boiled chicken, tuna, mango juice, guava juice, water -
4 - Would you be sending any of his supplies with him? (UVB, heating, food dishes, favorite towel/pillow/stuffed animal/blanket? etc...)
He doesn't really have any supplies . . . . . He is very laid back and just sleeps on whatever linens we have on the bed or whichever pillow is up there. He eats off of a paper plate usually, and for heat - if he wants to he goes under the blanket or sheet. He does have a tobaggen that he like to lay in with water in it.
5 - Has he ever been exposed to other Ig's, whether male or female? If so, how did he react? How about other animals at all? (I have 3 cats, 3 Ig's - one female, 2 male -, and 1 rat)
He has seen our other iguana - Bean. Bean is the size of Toby's tail. Toby looked at Bean for all of about 5 seconds and kept going, he didn't do anything. I don't know if he has seen any other iguanas other than Bean. We have 3 small dogs, 2 BIG dogs, 2 hamsters, 4 rats, 2 mice, a Burmese Python, a Hog Island Boa, 2 corn snakes, 1 Sonora Gopher snake . . . . . . .AND a white cat.
6 - When you say "Fairly Tame" what do you mean? LOL
Well, if you wake him up too early, he is grouchy for a couple of hours. If you don't open his curtains he gets grouchy. He likes baths that he can walk in and out of and soft showers that aren't too cold.
7 - Has he ever suffered an illness, besides the drug addiction (IE: Liver problems, MBD, parasitic infestations etc...)?
I don't think so - he seems very healthy - just kinda on the lazy side.
8 - Did he have regular vet care? If so, what was his last vet visit for? And what were the results of any tests?
I don't think he has ever been to a vet. There are no vets here in town that care for reptiles and I believe the closest one is near Sacramento.
9 - What sort of abuse, besides the drugs, was he exposed to?
The lady that brought him to me said she had seen them poking him with things and putting drugs in his food and water, or blowing pot smoke at him.
10 - What is his approximate age?
I have no idea - sorry! He looks about 4 or 5 I guess.
11 - What has he been like behavior wise during breeding season?
When is breeding season? I guess you can tell I don't have iguana experience huh?
12 - Has he ever delivered a serious bite to a human?
He has only tried to smack us with his tail, that was when he first gor here. He has never bitten any one.
13 - Does his preference seem to be towards male or female humans?
He doesn't react to either one - he just likes to hang out - he doesn't care whos around.
14 - Is he okay around lots of people, or does he fare better around 1 or 2 people at a time?
Having people around doesn't bother him. He is pretty laid back.
15 - How is he in a noisy environment? (It would depend on where we would be able to keep him)
He hangs out in my daughters room - she is 14 and enjoys music and watching TV. . . . we have things going on constantly especially with the BIG dogs. Out BIG dogs are rottweiller/Husky mix and even though they get beat up by the liitle dogs, they bark and protect the house and us easily. They bark alot and it doesn't bother him.
As you can see, Toby is in need of a serious environment and diet overhaul, among other things. She has stated there's no place she can take him near where she lives - no rescues, and no reptile vets, so other than adoption to a knowledgable home, I don't think he'll have much of a chance.
Sincerely,
~Nan
P.S. I do have a couple pictures of Toby for anyone that's interested in him.
