Hi there,
Once again another question
The Blue Iguana, are these kept as pets? I have read about them roaming the wild still and the danger they are in due to domestic pets and humans but i was wondering whether they are like green iguanas and kept as pets.
Are their needs and temperaments different to the green Iggy?!

Hey Natascha The Blue Iguana is an endangered species and they are really not kept as pets I am sure a couple of people out there have one or 2 of them but they are illegal to have. Now there is a Hybrids you can have and get they are a mix of Blue and another iguana they are available. Here is a site you may want to read www.blueiguana.ky/ there is a lot of good stuff going on there and Marie was a big supporter of the program they have going. Patrick

Its actually quite nice to hear they are illegal to have and roam wild! I think they are lovely looking iguana's!
Thanks for the site was reading yesterday very interesting! And will keep an eye on the news!
Hybrids, with mixing breeds does this not cause complications and health risk?!
Thanks for the info Patrick!

Natascha, we have a blue hybrid named Kismet. She's actually mostly Cuban and looks more like a Cuban than a lewisi, but we think she is wonderful. She was bred by David Blair but we got her from her the reptile society in Louisiana when her previous owner couldn't keep her anymore. We renamed her Kismet because of the circumstances in which we got her. I love my green as much as my hybrid, but I must admit my hybrid's temperment is much more mellow.
Your posts, btw, are really difficult to read in that color. Maybe that will change when the background does, though.

When i was first looking to get an iguana i called around to many places to see what they had. one place i called was quite a ways away from where i live but they said they sold different kinds and sizes.. when i was confused and asked "different kinds..." they answered yes, we sell normal green iguanas from babies to 4 feet long and Cuban blue babies. they were selleing them at 50 dollars! my question is.. are what they called Cuban Blues actually a blue color? the blue iguanas are awesome.. i love the whole iguana/monitor look going on there. if a "cuban blue" is anything liek a blue iguana i would LOVE to look more into getting one in the future

I don't know what they meant by Cuban Blues. Perhaps they meant nubila-lewisi hybids, but $50.00 is *really* cheap. Heck, it's really cheap for a Cuban. I'm guessing, either way, it will look more Cuban. The upside is that I think that Cubans have the best temperment. Kismet is absolutely wonderful.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe some of these "blues" are terrestrial igs (sometimes AKA rock igs). So, while you can skimp on floor space a bit for a green ig as long as you provide lots of up and down climbing spots, the terrestrial igs require a lot more ground area to be comfortable.
So, an enclosure that is well suited for a green ig would have wasted height and not enough width and length for an ig of the same size that is more terrestrial than aboreal.

Sorry about the colour i think i will stick to black! LOL
Well i think they are beautiful, i love my iguana to bits and being the UK i had never seen anything like it the most unusual colouring i saw was Albino (not overly keen on them)
But thanks for all the information!
