I'm adopting an iguana that has been mistreated, and I think he may have been malnourished. He was fed a strict diet of cabbage since they had him. Any help with these questions, or suggestions, would be great.
1- I've heard from a few people that it's good to give them pediasure, certain crushed human multivitamins, and/or calcium powder. Is this true for any of these?
2- If I can't get fresh greens for Fiji (that's his name) on a regular basis, is it safe to feed him canned greens? That doesn't quite seem right, but it's another thing I've heard. I wouldn't want to put him strictly on a canned-food diet, but I was wondering if, for example, canned mustard greens or perhaps baby food is okay for him. (he's about a year old)

Yes, you can crush a multivitamin and calcium tablet and LIGHTLY sprinkle on his/her food a couple times a week - you have to be careful that you don't overdose him/her because that could be just as bad as under doing it. Pedialyte and Gatorade mixed with water occasionally is a good treat and a great way to hydrate your iguana. I do this with my female when she is gravid. I keep a few cans of it and baby food stocked in case of an emergency. I've never had to use it though. Of course nothing beats fresh. www.greenigsociety.org/ - for more great info.

Thanks! Fiji has been really badly treated...they only fed him cabbage. Nothing else, just cabbage. I'm 15, so I'm at the mercy of my parents for transportation to get groceries, and lots of that stuff is seasonal and all, so I wanted to make sure that if he needed food, I could get it. I just got him today! YAY! Thanks also for the links. I'll check them out!

You should also check out the green iguana society. They have a list of all food items you can feed your Iggy. Fiji will need lots of different greens in order for him to grow properly. I feed my iggy a mix of several different greens. Collard greens, Dandelion greens from my yard, mustard greens, romaine but not alot. Dandelion greens and collard greens are her favorite. She never fails to eat those.
